Let Me In! How to Write a Successful Submission to Metonym

October 9, 2025 Metonym Journal

Art, and the art of creating, is difficult. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Our editorial staff is comprised of unique minds—a variety of personalities and tastes. So, of course, we cannot offer a step-by-step guide on “How to Get Accepted,” but we would love to provide you with some general tips and tricks based on what we commonly look for in submissions.

1. Proofread and Use Clear Formatting

It may seem obvious, but sometimes grammar issues can be a make-or-break issue for editors, especially if there are so many that they are distracting. In some cases, we notify artists of changes we would like made before an accepted submission is put in the journal, but the best rule of thumb is to keep it clean and clear before submissions, with an easy-to-read and follow format.

2. Thoughtfully Adhere to the Theme

Most of the time, we are not looking for the most obvious connections to the theme. (Though, don’t be discouraged from being direct if that is your natural voice; sometimes those are the most successful!) The staff always loves submissions that profoundly consider the theme, taking a unique approach.

3. Read our Regulations and Stipulations for Submissions

We review our pieces anonymously (so we don’t know your names!) and have particular word counts depending on the type of piece you submit. We look for submissions that adhere to our guidelines, accompanied by a thoughtful piece of art or written work.

4. Keep Up with Our Media and Engage with Us!

We would love to get to know emerging artists as we work with you and review your submissions. Interact with us on social media and communicate clearly throughout the review process.

We are excited to continue in the submission process. Enjoy this time of creativity and exploration!
